Alt-Brighton Comic

I ought not to put up too much from this project for fear of spoiling it, but I couldn't resist showing a bit of this!

Sussex publishers Queenspark Books are putting together an anthology comic book all about Brighton. Thirtten writers and thirteen artists have been selected and paired up to create 13 individual stories set throughout Brighton's history...
The project kicked off about a year ago, but in the way of these things, it's only now that finished pieces of work are beginning to emerge amongst we artists, and I'm super excited to see
how awesome everyone's stuff is looking...

The comic's due out later this year, and will be full-colour.

The above is a tester-page I did, a kind of proof-of-concept for myself. I was keen to do my brown-paper-collage-and-paint-and-digital thing but hadn't brought that style to bear on anything sequential before, I'd used it for more graphicy/static stuff.

Without wanting to give too much away, my story, written by Robin Tulley, is about the author's experience of starting as an apprentice chef in 1956, in one of Brighton's great hotels - The Old Ship. The Old Ship has a rich and fascinating history (it is said that it was from here Charles II escaped England after his failed coup). And the Robin in the story gets to experience some of that history in an unexpectedly first-hand way...

Some pen (very) roughs.

I expect I'll put up more stuff as I go along. Watch this space...
